Whelp! We’re finally into summer! This means vacations, barbecues, and the kids being out of school. But for some (myself included) summer means we’re able to really get into our fitness goals, and with the advent of technology we’re able to track our fitness progress like never before! Now just a disclaimer: THIS WILL NOT INCLUDE WEARABLES! Sadly I don’t make enough money to buy a wearable, so those are immediately out of the question. However these will include applications that might interact with specific wearable tech that you might happen to own, so if you see an app that interacts with the wearable you own, you might want to give it a try! That said here’s some of my favorite fitness tracking apps.
FOR THE CASUAL TYPE:Calorie Counter – MyFitnessPal
iOS and Android – FREE
If you’re just getting into health and fitness and want to hit the ground running, this app is perfect for you. MyFitnessPal has a massive database of foods, each with their own calorie count and other health information. Not only that, but let’s say you get something out of the snack machine and want to see what MFP says about it, it has a built in barcode scanner that’ll match the code with the product and give you the nutritional info of that granola bar you got out of the vending machine for 75 cents. Also if you like seeing what you’re eating as far as nutritional info is concerned instead of reading words, MFP allows you to see your eating habits via a split vertical bar graph. This visualizes how much you eat as far as carbs, fat, and protein is concerned. Plus if you have any wearables or any accounts with other fitness apps, it’s likely that MFP will sync with it no problem. If you’re a casual fitness guru or a total newbie (like me) this app is right up your alley.

FOR THE ATHLETE: Adidas miCoach train and run
iOS and Android – FREE
Adidas has been known to be one of the big names when it comes to athlete apparel. However a while back they released a family of apps and wearables known only as miCoach. This app in particular gives you a massive amount of free training plans done by “adidas’ elite coaches” to help you lose weight, tone your muscles, and improve your strength and flexibility. Using your phone’s GPS, you can track your route, pace, and distance outdoors. Plus this does sync up to a lot of compatible wearables besides its own brand, so if you have a compatible wearable, this app is right up your alley! The pro plans, the GPS functionality, and the ability to have your wearables work with the app, added with the ability to listen to music while you do your workout makes this a great app for the athlete in your life!
FOR AT HOME FITNESS: DailyBurn
iOS and Android – Free (requires subscription)
Let’s face it, some of us (like myself) don’t get out much, let alone go to a gym to work out. A lot of services claim to bring the full gym experience to your home, but none do it better than DailyBurn. For just $13.00 (after a 30 Day Free Trial) you get access to a wide variety of videos ranging from high intensity workouts, to low intensity yoga! Plus when you first sign up for the site, you take a little quiz to see what your starter series will be (I got true beginner, and I’m ok with that). Not only are there a wide variety of workouts, but there’s also a wide variety of trainers each with varying personalities. Whether you need that Drill Sergeant trainer, or that trainer who is your best friend, DailyBurn’s got the trainer with the personality you need to meet your fitness goals. Plus DailyBurn is accessible on a wide variety of devices including iOS, Android, Xbox 360, PS3, and more! If you prefer the comfort of home while you work out, this is the app for you!
ALSO FOR AT HOME FITNESS: PimpYourMat
Web – $32 a month (One Month Free Trial for Little Green Dot Readers!)
One of the things I learned about being a morning person through Militza was that there are better ways to start your morning rather than sitting on your butt watching yesterday’s episodes of popular Comedy Central shows. Enter Tandy Gutierrez, Pilates genius of PimpYourMat. She gave us in the Morning Person Course a 1 month free trial to check her service out, and I was very pleased with what I saw. I started incorporating her pilates routines into my morning routine and even though I didn’t do them perfectly due to my…happy fat…I did the best I could, and that was okay with me. Plus, Tandy’s so awesome, she’s extending the free trial to the readers of my article!
If you sign up on PimpYourMat.com and use the promo code LGDLOI you’ll get 1 month of PYM ABSOLUTELY FREE for the month of July!
Pretty good value if you ask me. If you’re looking to shake up your morning routine, or looking for a new workout regimen to try, this is perfect for you!
So those are my picks for some great fitness apps, I want to know yours! Leave them in the comments below or let me know on Twitter @SirMiguelOrtiz and who knows, I might check them out myself and let you know my findings.
But until next time, this is Miguel of Little Green Tech…logging off!
