WHAT MAKES BALI SO BEAUTIFUL?
WEEK 4: Sea Breeze

Bali has some of the most gorgeous beaches, black sands, warm water, palm trees, sipping on coconuts…. as you can imagine – beach side days are a regular event for people around here.

And what you’ll notice, is that you can always tell when someone has just come from the beach because of the way their hair looks!

You know that beach wave look? It’s like your hair was styled by the ocean – it has volume, waves, texture and looks effortlessly put together.

There’s no need for hairspray or styling tools around here – it’s the salt-breeze in the air that gives you that Bali hair and we’re recreating it this week for our Bali Beauty Routine.

SEA BREEZE

A little bit of sea salt in the air can transform your hair. The salt acts like a texturizing spray, that captures your natural waves and gives it shape, hold and style.

Too much salt isn’t brilliant for your hair. Too much of anything rarely is.

So, rather than soaking your hair in sea water, we’re making a gentle spray that you lightly mist on – just like the sea breeze.

We’re also loading up the recipe with lots of nourishing ingredients to keep your hair hydrated and soft and then we’re finishing the week with a moisturising hair mask.

What you get is healthy, well-behaved hair that has natural style for days!

Here’s what’s happening this week:

Salt Spray

This week you’re creating your own Bali Sea-Breeze Spray to give your hair natural shape and style.

The first step is to re-create the salinity of the ocean.

I looked into ocean research websites to get the right calculations, and it turns out that to get the effects of the oceans around Bali, we need to create a solution of about 3.4% salinity – ok. that’s the hard part over.

For 1 cup of water, we need a heaping 1 1/2 teaspoons of sea salt. Let it dissolve fully.

Now we have a base of salt-water and we can simply mix in the rest of the ingredients.

Coconut oil is super moisturising, it’s going to help add shine and smoothen your hair strands. In place of oil, you can use your own conditioner.

Essential oil gives your spray a beautiful scent. This spray isn’t going onto your scalp, so don’t worry too much about the benefits of the essential oils here – it’s really just about creating a natural scent that you love.

optional Aloe Gel a really good idea is to replace the full cup of water with a blend of water + aloe vera. If you look at sea-salt sprays sold in stores, this is often done. Aloe is super nourishing and hydrating.  I like Lily of The Desert Aloe Gel for haircare, it’s thickened with carrageenan, a seaweed extract which happens to be brilliant for moisturising your hair too.
substitution: 3/4 water, 1/4 cup aloe gel

Pour the mixture into a spray bottle with a fine mist. I bought mine from Muji – but you can find them in the beauty supply stores or online.

Finish the week with a hair mask

You can use your Bali Sea-Breeze Spray everyday, but it’s best on days in between washes.  Lightly mist it on – a little does the trick. At the end of the week, use this Yoghurt & Honey hair mask for a nice conditioning treatment.

Bali Sea-breeze Salt Spray

  • 1 cup water (or 3/4 cup water + 1/4 cup aloe gel)
  • 1.5 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp coconut oil
  • 10 drops essential oil (a scent you love)
  1. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle with a fine mist. I bought mine from Muji – but you can find them in the beauty supply stores or online.

Putting it all together: Week 4
bali beauty routine

  • Sea salt acts as a natural texturizer for hair, it gives you a flexible hold and that tousled look
  • Make the Bali Sea Breeze Spray and use it this week to create natural, low maintenace beach waves. If you’re looking for a tutorial, check out this video: How to Style with Sea Salt Spray
  • A little salt is amazing, too much is drying. End the week with a hair mask to deeply condition your strands. Use this Yogurt & Honey recipe.

  1. Hi
When you mix the oil salt and water together how do you get it to stay blended? Love your website and recipes
    Thanks

    • Hi! Thanks for your question – it won’t actually stay blended, because of the oil and water. But what you do is shake it right before use! In commercial products, they add binders to keep the ingredients blended – but a lot of that stuff only adds buildup to our skin and hair. So give it a shake, and you’ll be good to go! 🙂

  2. I have been looking like crazy for sea salt hairspray all over Bali in Kuta and no luck and I’m litlle to lazy to make one if you know any place that might sell it would appreciate it

    • Hi! Aw, I do miss Bali!! I know it can be tricky to find what you’re looking for – so that’s why DIY is so much easier! Salt, water and you’re done! Give it a try 🙂 For essential oils, I definitely recommend Utama Spice, they are in Ubud and also deliver https://utamaspicebali.com/
