Detox the Right Way

When I first met Pooja, I was frustrated with my health. On paper, I was doing everything right, indulging in all the superfoods – but I knew that in my body, something wasn’t right. My symptoms started growing stronger and stronger… but I didn’t know what was wrong or how to fix it. I think a lot of us are feeling this way. We tend to look outwards for answers, maybe I should try this diet – or that diet… Look at her, she has a great body, she looks happy and healthy –  I wonder what she’s eating?

Pooja taught me to understand MY body. At the end of the day, understanding what works for you and what doesn’t, will be what helps you feel your own best. Your relationship with yourself, is your  most powerful relationship. I’ve since been investing a lot more of my time looking inward for answers.

At a recent Little Green Dot workshop, Pooja shared some of this same inspiration and knowledge that helped me. She called her talk Detox the Right Way – because in a world full of detox and diet options she believes its important to mindful of trends and focus more on understanding what’s right for you!

The Nutrition Clinic’s philosophy blends what we know about traditional diets with a foundation in Functional Medicine. We know that when we deviate too far from what our ancestors have eaten, we run into trouble. At the same time, our approach fully integrates up to date research findings on optimum nutrition. What this means in practice is that we are able to individualise diets based on each person’s unique biochemistry, metabolism, food preferences, intolerances and nutritional deficiencies.

We have launched RESET, a 10 day detox program to help people kick-start change and feel the difference first hand of eating right. A lot of people are disconnected from the fact that food is fuel and should ultimately make us feel good. We want people to be able to simplify, understand and connect with the powder of food and how it makes you feel.

Detoxification is a complex process that the body is built to do all the time. Most people need extra support for these systems to function optimally. The best way to think of this is to ask yourself “what am I doing today to support my body and what am I doing to hinder it?”There are so may things in urban living that strain our liver and digestive system — late nights, processed food, pesticides found in food and way too much sugar to name a few. Our 10 day program gives your body a break and helps you hit the RESET button by supporting your liver and gut.

I want people to understand the gut is really were it all starts. All disease start in the gut. Most people are surprised to discover that 75% of the immune system is in the gut so you can see how important it is to ensure your gut is healthy. When you experience digestive issues like bloating, constipation (this is anything less then once a day), it is your bodies way of raising a red flag and alerting us to look deeper.



EATING WELL WITH POOJA





MY DAILY BREAKFAST: 
I would love to eat eggs but my food sensitivity panel shows a strong intolerance to eggs. I often have leftovers, which I really enjoy. On some days I make a smoothie with greens, nut butter, coconut oil and some fruit.


CANT LIVE WITHOUT: Coconut oil- we use it for everything in our house including hair masks and dry skin.


FIVE ITEMS IN MY PANTRY: 

  • Selection of cooking oils -avocado oil, macadamia oil, ghee, mustard oil and olive oil
  • Almond flour for occasional gluten free baking
  • Loads of spices to flavour simple dishes. I like using whole spices that you heat in a little ghee to release flavour.
  • Tahini – I love this as a dressing with lemon juice! It is also a great source of calcium
  • Canned sardines — I like Wild Planet sardines. It is the only canned food I eat regularly and this company uses BPA free cans. Sardines are a great snack or addition to a quick lunch.

WHEN I FEEL LIKE HAVING A CHEAT DAY, I… Do. Food is many things including nutrition. It is also about family, habit, memories and fun. What I have to say is that when you eat well most of the time, you don’t really wake up in the morning saying ” I want a cheat day where I  can eat all the junk that I can”. I don’t crave fast food, or processed food at all. On days when I want a treat, I go for it. I make it the best I can find, and truly enjoy it!


WHEN I HAVE A SWEET TOOTH… If I crave something sweet, I know that is my body’s way of saying I have gone too long without eating. It is a signal that my blood sugar is out of whack, it is usually solved by some protein and good quality fat.


ONE PIECE OF HEALTH ADVICE I’D GIVE… Get enough sleep, you should be in bed by 10:30 to give your body enough time to heal and recover. Tissue growth and repair takes place when you are in deep sleep.


HEALTH TREND TO SKIP: Juice detox. There is way too much sugar, no fibre and very little support for your liver. We love adding a vegetable juice to your day — but having 4-5 glasses of juice a day and nothing else will not support your liver.

The liver needs specific nutrients — including sulphur-based amino acids — in order to detoxify. Without these you are not completing the complex pathways of detoxification in the liver.


SIMPLEST WAY TO IMPROVE HEALTH TODAY: Spend some time in nature…without your phone. It is so simple but so few people take anytime out during their day just to be.

  • Hi Militza! I think Pooja is so right in all of what she said, especially the “cheat day” part. If you embrace a healthy diet full of nourishing foods, instead of a fad diet, there’s never a cheat day. There’s the ocassional enjoyment of something out of the ordinary that tastes amazing. I ocasionally have conventional ice cream when I’m out with my family, zero regrets, and eat whole foods daily.
