One of my favorite things about going to the cinema – is the popcorn. There’s this deep rooted emotion around it, at least for me, that popcorn equals entertainment.

And every time I cook some up at home, the sound of the popping triggers that feeling of fun!

Now, I know that we’re always on the look out for a good, healthy snack – and even though movie theatre popcorn is not on the list – these homemade flavoured popcorn recipes definitely top it!

Wether you buy a good natural brand of microwave popcorn, or pop your own – I’m telling you – you’re going to be making this snack every other day! Maybe, like me, even find yourself walking around town with a bag of popcorn in your purse and a smile on your face.

I’ve been playing with different flavourings – and there are three that I’m pretty obsessed with right now – let’s see what you think:

Coconut Fleur de Sel Popcorn

Sweet and salty – it’s insanely good!! This flavour was inspired by Big Tree Farm’s Coconut Sugar and Sea Salt blend. If you can get your hands on it, I highly recommend it! Or, you can mix your own blend at home. I found that blitzing the sugar into a fine powder really helps coat the popcorn evenly.

  • 2 cups popped popcorn (one handful of popcorn kernels)
  • 1-2 tablespoons coconut sugar mixed with sea salt
  • 1-2 tablespoon coconut oil
  1. In a large bowl, pour the coconut oil over the popcorn and mix to coat evenly
  2. Immediately sprinkle on the coconut sugar/salt blend to taste

Sweet & Spicy Curry Popcorn

This has a spicy, deep flavour that is balanced by a sweet kick. It’s really addictive and good snack with an iced drink. Here’s how I made it:

  • 2 cups popped popcorn (one handful of popcorn kernels)
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon coconut sugar
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper (depending on how spicy you like it)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  1. Make the spice mix
  2. In a large bowl, pour the coconut oil over the popcorn and mix to coat evenly
  3. Immediately sprinkle on the curry spice blend

Truffle “Parmesan” Popcorn

Truffle parmesan fries are my weakness. Truffle “parmesan” popcorn on the other hand… my superpower! The vegan parmesan flavour comes from pine nuts and nutritional yeast, which if you haven’t heard of yet is a deactivated yeast that has a kind of cheesy flavour. It sounds like space age food, but it’s all very normal stuff – around our crowd anyway! ha! Here’s how I made it:

  • 1/4 cup pine nuts
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon truffle oil
  • 2 cups popped popcorn (one handful of popcorn kernels)
  1. blitz together the pine nuts, nutritional yeast and salt. If you have extra left over, keep it in the fridge for up to a week or store it in the freezer for longer.
  2. in a large bowl, pour about a tablespoon of truffle oil over the popcorn and mix to coat evenly
  3. immediately sprinkle on the “parmesan” blend

    • Hi Greenderella! We do Friday Family Movie night in my home too! 🙂 It’s where I got all the practice making popcorn. Now I find myself eating it throughout the week too. Yes, do stock up on kernels 🙂

  1. Please explain how to pour 2 tablespoons of liquid coconut oil on popped corn in order to spread evenly on the kernels. Most of it is absorbed by the kernels initially distributed on? I attempted to use coconut oil together with the sugar and salt and pop it altogether and it worked fairly well however difficult not to burn it.

    • Hi Brett – the secret really is doing the mixing in a large, oversized bowl. Pour the oil over the popped popcorn – the same you would melted butter – then immediately salt and flavour. Give it a good toss in the bowl and you’ll find that everything gets well coated.

      Hope that helps!

  2. The curry popcorn sounds really good. Having a bit of spice must add a lot of flavor. These all sound like good ideas for a stay in movie night.
