Lately I’ve been wanting to make my own mouthwash – it’s another product, often full of chemicals that I felt I could simplify. But, the problem with making any water based product is the shelf life, water breeds bacteria. So, inspired by powdered toothpaste, I thought, why not make a powdered mouthwash? That way we can simply dissolve it when needed…. Exactly! Why not? Let’s do it!
Baking Soda: Often used in toothpaste, baking soda is alkalising – which means it can help to rebalance acidic conditions in the mouth (a major cause of gum disease and ulcers). It also kills germs and neutralises bad odours – like morning breath and of course, the infamous garlic toast breath.
Peppermint Oil: Baking soda works wonders, but tastes a bit… salty. A couple drops of peppermint essential oil will not only brighten up the flavour, but it also helps with toothaches, inflammation of the mouth and adds some serious antibacterial fighting power to the mix! Make sure you use a pure essential oil!
That’s where I stopped with my recipe. I’ve read that some add salt to promote healing and to kill bacteria. Others add Stevia to sweeten. I didn’t, but feel free to play with your recipe!
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 10 drops pure peppermint essential oil
- In a container, thoroughly blend the baking soda with the peppermint oil.
- Close the lid and keep it handy near your sink.
- To use: dissolve 1 tsp of peppermint baking soda into roughly 1/3 cup of water.
- Swish for 30 seconds and spit out
