  • My passion is the skin! I'm endlessly fascinated by this organ - and when I think about skincare - I think about nourishment. Food for the skin. ⠀ .⠀ Elderberry is an herb that I've been using a lot this week. It's been traditionally used as nourishment for the body, inside, and out. ⠀ .⠀ Elderberries are antioxidant RICH. Look at the purple color - it tells you everything. Antioxidants give resilience to skin.⠀ .⠀ Elderberry flowers move stagnant energy and promote circulation. It's astringent, which tones the skin and controls oil production. ⠀ .⠀ To make your mask, blend:⠀ 1 part berries + 1 part flowers until powdery fine. Combine with 1 part kaolin clay. (1 part means equal measurements) ⠀ .⠀ The dry powdered mix will keep for 3-6 months. ⠀ .⠀ A tip when activating your mask: ⠀ Scoop out 1 tbsp of powdered mask and mix with droplets of HOT water to form creamy consistency - and then let it steep for a few minutes. This is an herbal mask, steep it like a tea.   • TOPICAL HERBALISM⠀ .⠀ When we consume an herb... our body takes in this whole food and breaks it down into a useable form. ⠀ .⠀ BUT HOW ABOUT OUR SKIN? How do you nourish the skin topically with whole food herbs?⠀ .⠀ Here we have dried elderberry - it's rough, it's hard and in its whole form, we can't use it on the skin topically. We need to process it - as our body does internally - to make its benefits available. ⠀ .⠀ Elderberry is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, it's anti-inflammatory and incredibly high in antioxidants (that purple color tells you!) Its' basically skin food! ⠀ .⠀ You can encourage those nutrients out through an infusion or hydrosol preparation. ⠀ .⠀ You can also make herbal POWDER.⠀ Grinding the herb, breaks open those plant cell walls, to more easily release its medicine. You can then use this powder to make herbal facial masks. ⠀ .⠀ To make your own herbal powder - you need a blender or bullet blender, that can grind the elderberries into as fine of a powder as you can get it!
