Here’s a fun recipe for raw brownie bites – yes, you read that right! Raw, as in: no baking, no sugar, no flour, no eggs, no milk – but so rich in chocolately flavor you will happily and guiltlessly devour them! These brownies will change your life, it’s that serious.

Raw Brownie Bites

I made this batch for my Green Living workshop – it’s so easy and always a crowd pleaser. After the initial shock of eating a “raw” brownie everyone always asks for the recipe, so I thought I’d share it with you too! These make not only fun desserts, but really healthy and satisfying snacks to carry throughout your day – they’re like little energy balls that your body (and taste buds) will love! I know, you’re still wondering – what’s a raw brownie? Ok, ready… here it is:

Nuts and dates - raw brownie bites ingredients

Nuts. A nutritional power house and now new studies show that eating nuts releases serotonin, a substance that lessens feelings of hunger and makes you feel happier! In this recipe the nuts act as the flour.

Dates. An amazing source of fiber and taste just like brown sugar! The very cool thing is that studies show that while dates contain high amounts of natural sugars, they are actually low-glycemic and won’t raise your blood sugar levels – which means no crazy spikes and crashes.

Cacao Powder. Actually really nutritious and full of antioxidants. Cacao is the seeds from the cacao fruit, which produce chocolate in raw form, before fat, sugar, and other “sweeteners” are added. When it’s processed and heated, it loses many of its health benefits, but raw cacao powder offers vitamins, minerals and is considered an anti-aging food! Cacao powder gives this recipe its rich chocolate flavor.

Raw Brownies Bites Recipe

  • 1 1/2 cups pitted dates
  • 1 cup nuts ((walnuts, almonds, cashes or a mix))
  • 1 cup cacao powder
  • pinch salt
  • 1 small dash vanilla extract (or powder if you have it)
  1. In a food processor, blend the nuts until they break down finely. Careful not to over-blend, or it will begin to release its natural oils and you’ll end up with peanut butter!
  2. Add in the cacao powder, salt and vanilla. Pulse until well combined.
  3. Blend in the dates one at a time, making sure that there are no pits.
  4. You’ll end up with a crumbly mixture which you can shape into balls or flatten out like a brownie.

Spiced almond milk and raw brownie bites

I love to eat my brownies with a cold glass of spiced almond milk (above), but that’s a recipe for another time. Now get out there and whip up a batch of raw brownies – for yourself, or for a friend – and when they change your life, I want to hear all about it!

  1. anywhere else we can get the cacao powder aside from BGO?
& really? we don’t need to cook cacao powder? i’m still so amazed actually!
    thnx….mas 😉

    • Hi Mas! You can use any cacao powder really, the ones sold in supermarkets to make hot cocoa and for baking. The reason I like the brand from BGO is because it’s not processed and still retains it’s nutrients. Whichever you get, just make sure that it doesn’t have milk powder or sugar added in.

And absolutely, you can eat the powder without cooking!

      Enjoy!

  2. I’ll be making these for my son’s treats after football training. Think they will definitely beat the biscuits and sweet granola bars I’m giving him. 🙂

  3. HI Militza
This sounds yummy and i am going to make it. Do I use raw nuts or do i need to roast them?
I love dates, nuts and chocolate! This seem like a great combi without the sinful calories!
    Cheers,
    Angie
