This skincare idea came inspired by actual food. Have you heard of bliss balls? I see them in every cafe here in Bali – the whole thing is that they’re healthy, a great treat and convenient… bliss. Right? And I started thinking, you know what – this would make really good skincare too!! So, after a lot of playing in the kitchen – I’m excited to share my skin food version of a treat with you, Beauty Bliss Balls…
They’re super fun, really good for your skin, guaranteed to make you smile… you just have to try it.
What is a Beauty Bliss Ball?
It’s a cleanser & mask, which you activate with water. The balls are dense, but the moment you add water, it melts into a lush cream, which you can buff right onto your skin.
I love this kind of recipe – because it’s “dry” the shelf life is conveniently longer. You can pre-make a batch, store them in a container in your bathroom for weeks or in the fridge for months… they’re not as tasty as they look, so there’s no risk of you sheepishly eating your skincare. Promise, my kids tried.
It’s all about what it does for your skin!! Let’s talk about the ingredients – the glow worthy base is made of oat flour and cacao powder… blended together in coconut oil. Oh wait, that does sound delicious though 🙂
Oats are a natural cleanser, so when you’re thinking about how to clean your skin naturally – what’s really interesting about oats is that it has saponins, which have a soap-like foaming property. You’re not going to see bubbles, but in a very gentle and elegant way – the saponins in the oats bind to excess oils on your skin, dirt and bacteria – so that the water in your shower can wash it away clean.
Where do your find ground oats? You can buy oat flour, or just blitz rolled oats in a blender.
Raw cacao powder is like dinner and dessert for your skin. But I’m not talking about Hershey’s coco powder here… You want 100% raw cacao and what you’ll get is a powerhouse of nutrients and antioxidants for your skin. And that chocolate scent… it’s irresistible. It’s like chocolate icing on the cake.
Listen, if you come home from a long day, tired and grumpy – get in the shower with a dark chocolate beauty bliss ball – and I dare you not to come out feeling 100% different. This is what self care is all about.
Where do you find raw cacao? Any health food store, you’re looking for something like this.
Beauty Bliss Balls Recipe // Dark Chocolate Cleanser & Mask
- 1/4 cup oat flour (or ground rolled oats – to powder fine (up to 1/2 cup if needed))
- 1/4 cup cacao powder
- 1 1/2 tbsp coconut oil
- combine the dry ingredients in a food processor or bowl
- slowly drizzle in the first tablespoon of oil until a “dough” forms. Add more oil if it’s too crumbly, but a little at a time.
- you can take the “dough” to the table and knead until you get a dense, firm dough
- roll into balls
- if it’s too crumbly, add more oil. If it’s too wet add more ground oat flour
- stores 2-3 weeks in an airtight container
- stores 2-3 months in the fridge. But they will be hard, so you’ll need to let it come to room temp before using.
Let me show you how it comes together (and how to use it!)…. three ingredients, less than ten minutes and you’ve got bliss… all week!
You don’t need a food processor – you can use a big bowl and a whisk. But… I like my toys
Pour in the oat flour. Or blitz rolled oats first in a blender – you want it to be powdery soft, like flour.
If you have a sifter, use it! I’m putting one on my birthday wish list. That way the oats are super fine!
Add in your cacao powder…
And then combine the dry ingredients…
And then s.l.o.w.l.y pour in the oil – because its really easy to go from the exact right consistency – to sludge…
When it balls up – it’s ready!
100% you want it to feel like a play-dough. Not sticky at all, it’s should hold its shape nicely.
For more control, you can actually knead the “dough” on a flat surface, adding in oil ever so slowly…
And then you’re ready to roll out your Beauty Bliss Balls. Dust them in a little cacao powder – and wow – look what you just made! Gourmet skincare!
Aren’t they pretty?!
How to Use Beauty Bliss Balls
Simply mix one Beauty Bliss Ball with water until it breaks down thick and creamy.
You can do this in a dish – and then apply it onto your face as a mask/cleanser.
…or what I’ve been doing is that I use it as a full body cleanser.
I wet my skin in the shower, turn off the water and then use the Beauty Bliss Ball like a bar of soap. It starts to slowly melt away on your skin…. as it gently exfoliates. And it smells of chocolate. In the shower.
I would love your feedback on this recipe! Let me know what you think by leaving me a comment!
