  • 20 Ways to Get the Most out of Your Lemons

If you’re a green shake enthusiast, green juice lover – or trying out the 21 day morning detox – you’re going to be using a lot of lemons! Don’t throw away those peels – so much goodness lives there! I have 20 ways to use them:

    What-to-do-with-lemons

    1. Lemon zest for cooking. Before you squeeze your lemon, zest it first. You can store it in the freezer to use for cooking when you need. Perfect to brighten up a cream pasta sauce!
    2. Lemon Vinegar Cleaner. Cut off the peels and store them in the fridge until the end of the week. You’ll have enough to make  a vinegar infusion. Pat them dry and make a lemon vinegar to use in your household cleaning recipes. Use this recipe for the how-to.
    3. Lemon Ice-cubes. Add lemon slices to your ice-cube tray to brighten up your drinks!
    4. Lemon zest butter. Make any steamed vegetable awesome by mixing in a little lemon zest, butter and herbs!
    5. Make Lemon Olive Oil. Pat dry the lemon rinds and add to olive oil. Allow to sit for 2 weeks to infuse in the lemon flavor
    6. Make Drawer Sachets. Dry out your lemon peels in a warm oven and then mix with spices like lavender to create a beautiful potpourri.
    7. Clean Stainless Steel. Use the rind of the lemon with a little salt to scrub your stainless steel clean.Lemon-Essential-Oils
    8. Perk up your Mood. Squeeze the lemon rinds and let the essential oils fall around you. Breathe in the uplifting scent – lemon essential oils are known to enhance your mood and reduce stress and anxiety.
    9. Sanitise your chopping board. Squeeze the lemon rinds and let the essential oils fall on the chopping board. Lemon essential oils are incredibly antimicrobial and help keep your boards clean!
    10. Make a fruit & veggie spray. Infuse the vinegar with lemon rinds and use the solution to clean your fruit and veggies. Get the recipe here.
    11. Make a lemon vinaigrette. Add lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, salt & pepper and dress up your greens!
    12. Lemon Scrub. Add lemon zest, soft brown sugar and pour in coconut oil until the mixture feels like wet sand. Makes a great gift!
    13. Coffee Cup Stain Remover. Place lemon peel in the stained cup with boiling water. Let it sit, and then wipe away with clothMicrowave-Cleaner
    14. Microwave Cleaner. Place your squeezed lemon in a bowl with some water. Microwave for 2 minutes. The essential oils in the steam will help to break up any caked-on stains.
    15. Oven Cleaner. Sprinkle baking soda inside your oven and use the used lemon to give it a good scrub. Rinse clean with a vinegar cleaner.
    16. Lemon Salt & Pepper. Dry the lemon rinds in a warm oven. After they have dried, pulverize in a blender. Mix with salt & pepper to make a homemade seasoning.
    17. Remove stains on surfaces. Great for any surface, wood or marble, take the used half lemon, add salt and scrub on stains.
    18. Clothing Stain Removal. Soak delicates in a bath of lemons and baking soda for an hour before washing.
    19. Make Lemon Extract. Just like a vanilla extract – it’s super easy to make. Zest you lemons and pour over vodka. Allow to sit for 8 weeks. As you collect more lemon zest you can add it to the mixture to strengthen your extract. Use lemon extract in cooking, baking and to make cocktails!
    20. Make a refreshing toner. Add boiling water over the lemon peels with a mint tea bag. Store in a spray bottle and in the refrigerator for a cooling and refreshing mist to perk up your skin (and mood!). Lasts for up to 5 days in the fridge. Note: You don’t want lemon oil on your skin out in the sun! Wait a few hours or use this is the evening or when you’re not planning on going out.
  • DIY Skin Polishing Recipe – For Skin So Smooth You Won’t Believe It!!

This is probably the best diy skin polishing recipe, ever. It’s like getting a microdermabrasion treatment, at one-millionth the cost. And I bet good money that you already have  the ingredients at home: baking soda & soap!

Baking soda is unlike other scrubs – the micro grains act like sandpaper, which sounds like the last thing you’d want for your skin, expect for when you do. It’s still gentle enough – but it does such an amazing job at removing that dead, outer layer of the skin: the layer that is responsible for dullness and fine wrinkles and where sun-damage lies. It also helps with those miserable blackheads that like to pop up! No worries, with a little baking soda – bumps become smooth, skin glows… cakes rise, it’s amazing stuff!

    DIY Skin Polishing Recipe

    • baking soda
    • normal face wash
    1. pour a little face wash in the palm of your hand
    2. add baking soda until you create a paste
    3. very gently scrub your face, or why not grab your body wash, jump in the shower and do your whole body!
    4. wash with water and then feel how incredibly smooth your skin is!

Do this once or twice a month, but no more than that – or your skin may get sensitive and peel. This treatment not only keeps your skin renewed, but it makes for better absorption of the moisturisers and serums that you apply, which means you get more benefit out of your products. Just make sure there are no chemicals in your products, you don’t want your new skin soaking all that in! Go do it! 🙂

  • Skin Nourishing Bath Tea Recipe

Skin Nourishing Bath Tea Recipe | littlegreendot.com

We make this bath tea recipe at home – it’s a favorite around here for two very specific reasons:

    1. it makes my girls instantly co-operate during bath time, and that means no tantrums, everyone is happy!
    2. it takes minutes to make, is really inexpensive –  yet feels so luxurious! Make a big batch and it will lasts for months!

Skin Nourishing Bath Tea Recipe | littlegreendot.com

Now, this tea is perfect for anyone, of all ages. I make it mostly for my girls, but I also enjoy a soak for myself – It really helps to soothe tired muscles and worries away.  I love how it leaves my skin soft, and smelling of flowers…

Parents: On those days when the girls are less than excited about bath time, I’ll ask them “who wants to make a bath tea?”  That turns a mood around real quick! Try it!!

Skin Nourishing Bath Tea Recipe | littlegreendot.com

Sometimes I’ll pour the bath tea into a toy tea kettle, and the girls will play tea time in the bath.

If this is for you –  maybe skip the toy kettle  and opt for a candle or book instead 🙂  The scent is beautiful and your skin will love you for it!

Skin Nourishing Bath Tea Recipe | littlegreendot.com

Here’s a list of herbs that you can try – each one offering different properties. You can use loose herbs, or even tea packets! Whatever is easiest for you:

    • Lavender –  calming to the senses, it’s great for relaxation. Lavender is antibacterial, great for cleansing the skin
    • Rose –  beautiful, happy scent, it helps to soothe away stress and headaches. Rose contains vitamin C, the beauty vitamin, which helps to build collagen and maintain youthful skin. It also has astringent properties, helping to clean and tighten pores.
    • Green Tea/White Tea – helps to detoxify and replenish. It’s packed with antioxidants, great for ageing skin. It does contain caffeine, so you may not want to use it for kids!

  • Chocolate Cupcake Fizzy Bath Powder Recipe

Chocolate Cupcake Fizzy Bath Powder Recipe | littlegreendot.com

This fizzy bath recipe is pure joy! It’s the perfect remedy to a busy, stressed-out day:  you’re smiling as you make it and giggling when you use it! It’s completely all-natural, and if you don’t already have the ingredients in your kitchen – you’re going to want to pop into the supermarket, today! And parents, if you’re little one ever complains about not wanting to take a bath – whip this up! It’s some kind of magical thing that just makes everyone instantly happy! (don’t worry,  clean up is easy. Had to be said!)

Chocolate Cupcake Fizzy Bath Powder Recipe | littlegreendot.com

Though a fizzy bath powder may seem like just a bit of silly fun, these ingredients are seriously good for your skin and health!

    • raw chocolate: Tops the charts in antioxidant levels – it’s even higher than blueberries! Raw chocolate help to protect your skin from free radicals which can cause the effects of early ageing.
    • baking soda:  Both antibacterial and antifungal, baking soda helps to keep your skin clean. A baking soda bath is a great remedy for acne and nail fungus or irritated itchy skin.
    • epsom salts: Delivers minerals to your body, which directly affect your health and wellbeing. Epsom salt consists of magnesium sulphate, which can be absorbed by the skin, replenishing mineral deficiencies.  It even helps our body to better absorb nutrients in the that food we eat. Epsom salts are used to relieve tired aching muscles and as a detox treatment to pull out toxins from the body, especially heavy metals.
    • citric acid: this is what reacts with the baking soda, to create that fun fizzy action, but it also has great skin properties of it’s own. Citric acid is a natural fruit acid, which is high in Vitamin C – the beauty vitamin. It helps to build collagen and keep our skin bright and youthful.
    • vanilla: A mood enhancer, the scent of vanilla evokes feeling of calm and happiness.
    • sprinkles: ok, this part is just a bit of silly fun – which,  is also very, very good for you!

    Let’s see it in action!

Chocolate Cupcake Fizzy Bath Powder Recipe | littlegreendot.com

Have fun making your own things. Take the time to disconnect. Use lovely, natural ingredients and be kind to our planet and to your body. Sure, you can buy something like this – but making it is half the fun! Enjoy!

Chocolate Cupcake Fizzy Bath Powder Recipe

    • 1/2 cup baking soda
    • 1/2 cup epsom salts
    • 1/4 cup citric acid
    • 1/4 cup raw cacao powder
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1/2 tsp almond, olive or coconut oil
    • sprinkles
    1. mix all the dry ingredients together
    2. blend the oil and vanilla extract together

    3. pour the wet mixture over the dry and work together with your hands.
    4. get in the bath, and sprinkle the powder in!

Tip for parents: give your kids a tray with the chocolate bath powder on top. It feels like wet sand, let them shape and play with it and watch them erupt in laughter as it gets wet and starts to fizz up!

  • Natural Beauty – Morning Detox Routine

    21 Day Morning Detox Routine | littlegreendot.com

This week I taught a workshop on how to Detoxify Your Skin. It’s always fun – we show you tons of recipes to make your own natural skincare – but one of my favorite beauty recipes is actually not something that you put onto your skin, but rather into your body!  It’s a routine that I love doing and I really want to encourage you to join me! It’s going to help you detoxify your body and glow!

UPDATE: I’ve put everything I know about simple, healthy natural skincare into a BRAND NEW three-week online workshop called:

“SIMPLIFY Skin: Natural, effortless, whole food skincare”

You’ll learn to toss out the toxins, and surround yourself with beautiful skincare that you confidently make yourself!

    Check it out here: littlegreendot.com/simplify-skin

Here’s what you do: Right when you wake up, before you eat anything – drink a big glass of warm water with a squeeze of lemon. There are a lot of health reasons why, but I’m most excited about the change of perspective that this routine offers.

Here’s the thing: when it comes to our culture of beauty, think about how many products we use on our skin everyday. The average consumer uses – are you ready for this: 16! If you start to count, there’s your lotion, every bit of make-up, night-cream, eye cream, wrinkle cream, face wash, toner… the list goes on.

We use all of these beauty products, exposing our skin to so many different chemicals and the really irritating part is that  a lot of them don’t even work. If you really want to look your best – it’s about changing your perspective, from focusing on achieving “beauty” to achieving health. Instead of looking to products to solve your beauty concerns, look at healthy foods, which can really can improve your skin at a cellular level!

When you start doing this morning detox routine, you feel and see results – a lot of your skin concerns may clear up and you’ll realize that you never needed all the products and creams! When you feed your body what it needs and help it to detoxify, you’ll see:

    • reduction in eye circles
    • clearer skin
    • glowing skin
    • anti-ageing effects
    • increased energy
    • weight control

Morning Detox Lemon Water - 21 Day Morning Detox Routine | littlegreendot.com

So that’s where the water and lemons help! Hydrated skin is supple, less prone to wrinkling and flushes your body of toxins. I’m convinced that a lot of people looking for anti-aging creams are actually just dehydrated! With the lemons, you’re going to get an extra boost of Vitamin C which helps to build collagen and keep your skin taut and firm! It also helps to boost your digestion and metabolism, to help you burn calories through out the day. Tell me, what product can promise all that! So stay out of the beauty aisles, save your money, and use it for something really useful!

Are you ready to try it? Here’s what you do:

    Morning Detox Routine

    • 1/2 lemon
    • 2-4 cups warm water
    1. squeeze the lemon into your warm water
    2. drink this first thing in the morning, before breakfast, then eat as normal. Though, you may find that by starting your day with this healthy intention, it really changes the way you think about what kind of foods you want to eat the rest of the day!
    3. If your mornings are rushed, just drink your lemon water as you get dressed.
    4. do this every single morning for 21 days, then report back and tell us what changes you’ve noticed!

p.s. set yourself up for success! This routine is easy, but you need to set your mind to creating a healthy habit…

    • Go to the store today and buy 4 lemons, so you’re set for the week.
    • To help you track and keep your habits, I love the app Coach.me – it has a really fun swiping motion to check off your list of goals as you tackle them throughout the day. Plus you can invite friends to cheer you on and keep you accountable to achieving the things that you want for yourself.

Go get those lemons, and join me tomorrow morning for the 21 Day Morning Detox Routine!

  • Paint Your Nails Green – Natural & Eco-Friendly Nail Polishes

In your green efforts, you may have come across eco-friendly nail polishes and wondered what they were all about. I did myself, so when Auum – The Honest Nail Salon opened up specialising in vegan, animal-cruelty free and eco-friendly nail services, I knew they could answer a few questions for us. I spoke with the owner, Lung Lung, and she not only opened up a lot on the subject, but even gave us an awesome nail art DIY tutorial to do at home!

    green-chat-at-the-nail-salon

Here’s what Lung had to say:

    on natural nail polishes

Conventional polishes contain chemicals called plasticisers which fix the colour onto your nail. These are the same chemicals used for painting cars – which already paints the wrong image, but the worrying part is that these same chemicals pass through your nail bed, and into your blood stream.

Lung talked about the importance of people knowing their options. Many, especially pregnant women, are not aware of how harmful these chemicals can be. We’re already bombarded by so many toxins in our day, so why not use products that cause the least amount of harm. Lung reminds us that no polish can be completely natural, but there are better options:

    • “3 Free” polishes – water based polish, void of the top 3 offending chemicals
    • “5 Free” polishes – water based polish, void of the top 5 offending chemicals

So how do you know if a polish is truly water-based? It has no smell! That’s something I noticed right away in The Honest Salon, there were no nauseating chemical smells at all!

    on animal testing

This can be tricky for most consumers, because even though a product may not have been tested on animals, their parent company may have. A lot of well-known brands are owned by a larger corporation, who test their formulations on animals’ skin, fur and eyes for allergic reactions. We’re talking about nail polish here, and it’s just insane to think that we would contribute to that kind of cruelty, for the sake of a manicure.  Luckily there are a few brands out there who are completely cruelty-free! Lung’s favourite brands are:

    • Scotch – 3 Free, animal-cruelty free (they also do a Soy Oil-based polish remover which Lung loves to use)
    • Priti NYC – 5 Free, animal-cruelty free

    on performance

So how do water-based polishes hold up against their plasticised counterparts? Lung says that your manicure will last up to 2 weeks – you may find that Priti NCY hold up a bit longer than Scotch, but they both come in so many colours that you’ll have fun switching it up anyway! Lung loves designing nail art  at her salon, and has shared with us her technique to create a really fun and super simple design yourself at home!

    eco-friendly-nails

    • Step 1 – Apply a first layer of base coat and let it dry. The base coat helps the longevity of the manicure and prevents the likelihood of dark coloured polishes staining your nails.
    • Step 2 – Apply two layers of the first colour, allowing each layer dry a little . Before moving on to step 3, ensure your nails have dried.
    • Step 3 – Gently position a small piece of tape on your nail so the tape’s edge runs down the center of your nail. Apply two layers of the second nail colour to the exposed side of your nail.
    • Step 4 – Checking that your nails have dried, apply a new piece of tape horizontally across the nail. Make sure the edge of the tape cuts the center of the length of your nail accurately. Apply 2 layers of the last nail polish colour to one side of the nail. *Do not remove the tape applied in Step 3 before you apply the additional tape for Step 4.When your nails have dried, gently peel off the tapes on your nail and apply a single layer of topcoat.
    • You’re done! The secret to this DIY nail art is patience! Ensure each layer has dried sufficiently before removing or adding on tape to avoid smudges and fingerprints.

    *****************

Thanks a million to Lung for sharing her knowledge with us all – she’s on a mission to “educate consumers, one manicure at a time!” If you’re in Singapore, definitely check out her eco-friendly nail salon! Everyone can get more nail art inspiration on their Facebook page, where they share tons of pictures of their work!

  • A Weekend In Koh Samui – Part 2

Remember how I told you that something pretty awesome happened in Thailand? What I didn’t tell you is that this whole trip was completely unplanned. Out of the blue, Ciaran gets a call to speak at a conference in Koh Samui, and three days later we were on a plane.

So, I find myself suddenly in Thailand, loving the spontaneity of it all, but I had no idea how serendipitous it would be! We’re walking outside of our beautiful hotel, and spot this little shop…

    Serendipity

Inside, the first thing I see are these most amazing gourmet raw treats! I thought, “This place is really different!” So, we dig in to the raw blueberry cheesecake and raw chocolate + black chia seed truffles. Yum! Now normally, at this point  – I would have eaten my treat, smiled happily and then gone on my way (you might remember how I told you that I’ve always been a little shy, a little introverted), but things are different for me now…

    raw-treats-koh-samui

On this day, I began talking to the owner, Scott, and asking lots of questions. It turns out, not only is he really clued in to the natural world, but for the last 10 years he’s been working on his own products and has created the most unique, all-natural formulation that I have ever come across. He showed me his body wash, shampoo and conditioner, made with completely all-natural ingredients – herbs, plants and flowers – down to the soap. He uses soap nuts so that there are absolutely no chemicals needed to create his products –  no lye, SLS or anything at all!  Simply a fruit that naturally foams. I was already impressed. And then he told me about the probiotics!

    soap-nut-soap

This is an anti-anti-bacterial product! Unlike anti-bacterial soaps, which use toxic chemicals and kill indiscriminately, probiotics use friendly bacteria to maintain a healthy balance of flora in and on our body. Scott and I talked about how our relationship with bacteria has become misguided – we are marketed to believe that a healthy home and body is one free of all bacteria, but this idea could be causing us more harm than good.

Like me, he believes that instead of focusing on killing off all bacteria, we should be focusing on building our own body’s immunity to stay healthy, clean and safe. What Scott did is he develop a way to integrate friendly bacteria (probiotics like in yogurts) into his soaps, to help keep our skin healthy. I loved the philosophy behind this product, working with nature instead of against it… so I picked up a bottle for myself right away.

Here’s the thing – my skin and hair felt and looked incredible after I used it! I have been on a lifetime search for a really good shampoo that makes my hair happy. I think that because he uses soap nuts, it’s more gentle and not stripping or drying at all. My hair was smooth and shiny – loving all the nourishing ingredients, like coconut and jasmine rice that Scott thoughtfully formulated in. I was blown away…

So, I did something that even surprised me – I walked right back over to the shop and talked to him about how to bring this product into Singapore. I think it’s so unique, so spot on – but before I get ahead of myself, first I want to know what you guys think. Probiotic Shampoo and Body Wash – would you try it?

I never set out for this, and had we not gone to Koh Samui, I would never have found this shop. And had we not gone on that day, I would have missed the owner who went on to travel the day after I met him… life is funny that way, but I believe these opportunities are happening around us all the time –  it’s when you’re present in the moments that you can see them.

I would love to be able to introduce this product to Singapore. Let me know if it’s something you could see yourself trying!

  • Adventures in Homemade Makeup – Lip & Cheek Stain

    lip-and-cheek-stain

I shared another fun do-it-yourself makeup recipe with the stylish folks at Aquila Style! This time I did a lip and cheek stain using ultra pigmented beet roots. Will it last as long as store bought makeup? probably not. Will you need to re-apply it? Sure. But who cares! It’s so beautiful, with a natural flushed pink color that you’ll love. Carry it in your purse and give yourself a dose of vitamin c throughout the day. Seriously, unlike the make-up that we buy – this stuff is actually good for you! Head over to Aquila Style for the recipe.

p.s – if you have little girls who love to play dress-up, they’ll love this project! My five year old has been smacking her lips in beet juice all day!

  • Translucent Face Powder DIY Recipe

    DIY Translucent Face Powder Recipe

I’m so excited to show you this recipe for translucent face powder! Not only is it fun to make, but it also gives your skin a break from all the toxins and chemicals found in store-bought makeup! And the ingredients are items that you probably have in your kitchen already.

Translucent Face Powder DIY Recipe | littlegreendot.com

This powder is very effective at mattifying the skin and setting your makeup, but the really beautiful thing is that because it’s made with skin-loving ingredients, it will also nourish your skin, too! Makeup that actually makes your skin better? You’ll love it; here’s how you make it:

Translucent Face Powder DIY Recipe | littlegreendot.com

    DIY Translucent Face Powder

    • arrowroot powder (this powder is made from dehydrated and ground arrowroot, which is known to have skin-smoothing effects. You can skip it if you can’t find it, but it does give your skin a more velvety feel)
    • cornstarch (absorbs excess oil, helping to give your skin a matte finish)
    • cocoa powder (has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help to firm and renew your skin)
    1. Combine 1/2 cup of arrowroot powder and 1/4 cup of cornstarch in a mixing bowl
    2. Add in the cocoa powder one tablespoon at a time until it reaches a shade similar to your own natural skin tone. This is a translucent powder, so try not to go too dark (use between 1 and 3 tablespoons)
    3. Mix thoroughly, breaking up any large pieces with the back of a spoon

You may keep your powder for up to six months in sealable containers; remember to shake the mixture well each time you use it.

Here’s the thing: when you see just how easy it is to make your own skincare products and how well they work, you’ll be less impressed the next time you walk into a shop and are bombarded with a million face powders to buy and clutter up your home.

With the money you save, you can invest in the brands that are doing really great things, that you’re happy to support!

In the meantime, have fun making your own products at home. It’s my favorite way to unwind and spend time doing something that is positive, healthy and good.

  • Rose Moisturizing Mist DIY

This Rose Moisturizing Mist makes such an amazing light moisturizer – you can spray it onto your face, all over your body and even your hair. You’ll love that this recipe is simple to make and yet delivers big on skin-loving nourishment!i

    Rose Moisturizing Mist | littlegreendot.com

Rosewater:  I used to think that the scent of rose was old-fashioned. But that’s not it at all. Its essence is like being from another time, but its aroma is sweet, fresh and springlike. Rose water itself boasts great benefits – It calms the skin, reducing inflammation and it maintains a healthy pH. It’s also mildly astringent, so it makes for a great skin toner, keeping your pores clean and clear.

Oil: There are so many types of oils that you can use for the skin and hair. When oil is cold-pressed, it means that it was expelled without the use of heat or chemicals and therefore retains all of its natural properties. Using oil as a moisturizer is smart because not only does it leave your skin feeling soft, but it builds and hydrates your skin at a cellular level. Oil contains omega fatty acids, which help to build strong cellular membranes something that the skin needs in order to retain its moisture and integrity. You can also include glycerin to help your skin attract moisture from the air and stay hydrated.

Rose Moisturizing Mist Ingredients | littlegreendot.com

These are just a few of the oils that you can use (pick one, or a blend)

    • For all skin types: olive, almond, argan
    • For dry skin: macadamia
    • For oily skin: jojoba
    • For mature skin: rosehip seed

Rose Moisturizing Mist Preparation | littlegreendot.com

The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose.
    George William Curtis

    Rose Moisturizing Mist Recipe

    • 1/2 cup rose water
    • 2-3 tablespoons oil of your choice and/or glycerin (I used jojoba oil in mine – it closely resembles our own skin's sebum (skin's natural oils), and soaks in very quickly making it a hydrating, yet very light moisturizer.)
    • spray bottle
    1. mix all of the ingredients together in a spray bottle

tip: add more or less oil depending on how light or rich you want your mist to be
